Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at megan@reformedmovementpsych.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

No, I do not accept insurance. This allows me to provide the highest quality, individualized care without the limitations insurance companies can place on session length, frequency, or type of treatment. Working outside of insurance also means your records remain completely confidential between us (except where required by law) and your therapy is guided by your goals—not a diagnosis code or treatment plan mandated by an insurance provider.

Yes, I previously accepted insurance. However, I have made the decision to move away from accepting insurance for new clients to better focus on providing individualized, high-quality care without the limitations often imposed by insurance companies. This shift allows me to tailor treatment more freely and maintain greater confidentiality and flexibility in therapy.

For continuity of care, previous clients who were already using insurance have been allowed to continue doing so for a transitional period.

Pilates is a mind–body practice that builds awareness, strength, and control through intentional movement and breath. In therapy, I use Pilates as a somatic (body-based) modality because our bodies often hold stress, trauma, and emotions that talking alone may not fully address. Movement can help regulate the nervous system, release physical tension, and create a greater sense of safety and presence in the body.

Pilates places special focus on the spine and pelvic floor—two key areas for both physical stability and emotional well-being. The spine supports posture and movement, while the pelvic floor plays a central role in core strength, balance, and even how we experience and release stress. By improving alignment, strength, and awareness in these areas, clients can feel more grounded, supported, and connected in both body and mind, which supports deeper healing and resilience.

Pilates is a low-impact exercise method that focuses on building strength, flexibility, and control throughout the whole body. It’s all about moving with intention—strengthening your core, improving posture, and creating balance between stability and mobility.

Pilates can be done on a mat or with specialized equipment like the Reformer, which uses springs and pulleys to add resistance and support. Because it’s adaptable, Pilates is great for all fitness levels—whether you’re brand new to exercise, recovering from an injury, or an athlete looking to enhance performance.

At its core, Pilates helps you feel stronger, more aligned, and more connected to your body in everyday life.

While both use the Pilates method, the purpose and focus are different.

  • Pilates Private Training is fitness-focused. Sessions are designed to improve strength, flexibility, posture, and overall physical conditioning. I provide personalized workouts based on your fitness goals, and the sessions do not include psychotherapy.
  • Pilates as a Somatic Treatment Modality is therapy-focused. These sessions integrate Pilates movement into the psychotherapy process to address mental health, trauma, and nervous system regulation. The exercises are chosen not only for physical benefits but also for how they support emotional processing, body awareness, and healing. This approach also draws on principles from other evidence-based modalities, such as Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and Polyvagal Theory, to help clients regulate their nervous systems, increase safety and connection, and work through stored trauma patterns.

In short—private training works on physical fitness, while somatic Pilates sessions are part of mental health treatment and guided by both your physical and psychological goals.

No. For ethical and professional reasons, I cannot provide both psychotherapy and fitness services to the same person. Combining these roles can blur boundaries, create conflicts of interest, and compromise the integrity of the therapeutic relationship.

When I am your therapist, our work is focused on your mental health goals within a confidential, clinical setting. When I am your Pilates trainer, our work is centered on physical fitness, and the professional relationship is non-clinical. Keeping these roles separate helps protect your privacy, maintain clear boundaries, and ensure you receive the highest quality care in whichever service you choose.

No. Clients must choose to work with me either as a psychotherapy client or as a Pilates private training client, and once you have begun in one role, you cannot switch to the other in the future.

Arizona law prohibits mental health counselors from entering into a dual relationship with a current or former psychotherapy client that could impair professional judgment or risk exploitation. This means that if I have ever been your therapist, I can never ethically or legally become your fitness trainer—and if I have been your trainer, I cannot later become your therapist.

This boundary protects the integrity of the therapeutic relationship, ensures compliance with professional ethics and state regulations, and safeguards your privacy and well-being.

Yes! Psychotherapy is a flexible and fluid process that can adapt to your changing needs over time. You can move between talk therapy, somatic work (like Pilates-based somatic therapy), and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) as we find what best supports your healing and growth. These approaches often work seamlessly together to address different aspects of your experience.

You can also choose to focus on just one modality if that feels right for you. I’ll provide professional recommendations based on your unique goals and presenting concerns, but ultimately, you have full autonomy to decide which treatment approach feels most comfortable and effective for you.

That said, not all modalities are appropriate for everyone. The suitability of each approach depends on the nature of your presenting concerns and treatment goals, so we’ll work together to determine the best fit for you.

Wear comfortable, form-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely and lets me see your alignment and posture. Leggings, yoga pants, or fitted shorts paired with a tank top or t-shirt work well. Avoid overly loose clothing, as it can get in the way during exercises and may unintentionally reveal sensitive areas while using the reformer equipment.

For safety and hygiene, fitness grip socks are required during Pilates sessions to prevent slipping on the equipment. Please bring your own pair with non-slip bottoms if you have them. Also, remove jewelry that could catch on the equipment and tie back long hair. You can purchase inexpensive grip socks here.

Yes. While True Direction Counseling, PLLC remains my official business name, I have rebranded under this new DBA to reflect a shift in my treatment focus and modality.

Over my years of practice, I recognized that many clients were missing a crucial component of healing: body regulation. Traditional talk therapy alone wasn’t always enough to fully support their recovery and well-being. This insight led me to integrate Pilates as a unique and powerful somatic modality, addressing the mind–body connection in a way that truly meets this unmet need.

The rebrand reflects this evolution and my commitment to offering a more holistic, integrated approach to mental health and healing.

My psychotherapy fees are based on several factors, including my professional experience, advanced training, specialized equipment, and the costs of maintaining a private practice.

I bring over 10 years of clinical experience, multiple degrees in mental health fields, and a 500-hour Pilates certification with ongoing continuing education in both psychotherapy and Pilates.

These qualifications allow me to offer a high level of expertise and a unique integrated approach to your care.

The pricing reflects the quality, individualized attention, and resources I provide to support your healing journey.

I received my bachelor of arts from Arizona State University and my master of science in counseling: clinical mental health counseling from the University of Phoenix.

I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC) with the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners (AZBBHE) and am board certified (NCC) by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).

I completed my 500-hour comprehensive Pilates teacher training certificate from the Club Pilates Teacher Training Program.

A comprehensively trained Pilates Instructor has completed an in-depth certification program that covers all of the Pilates apparatus—not just mat work. This training typically includes hundreds of hours of study in anatomy, teaching methodology, observation, practice teaching, and personal practice.

Comprehensive instructors are qualified to teach Pilates on all the traditional equipment, such as the Reformer, Cadillac/Springboard, Spine Corrector, Chair, Ladder Barrel, and Mat. This allows them to tailor sessions to each client’s needs, goals, and abilities, whether that’s building strength, improving mobility, enhancing posture, or supporting injury recovery.

In short, a comprehensively trained instructor has a well-rounded education in the Pilates method, giving them the tools to offer safe, effective, and personalized sessions for every body.
